We've had a busy end and beginning to our unit of inquiry. We finished our storytelling UOI with a mini unit on 'The Gingerbread Man.' Our little learners broke into two groups to practice reading and acting out a script for the story. It was a great way to practice reading with fluency and expression.
We have now started a new unit on communities working together. We have begun by talking about what a community is, and is made of. If you look at the picture above, it has our central idea and lines of inquiry. We are really looking forward to the parents who are coming in next week to tell us about their role in our community. We will also be having a visit from the fire department. In Math, we have been learning about 2D shapes. Students have learned about what polygons are, and to name some 'tricky shapes' like trapezoids, pentagons, hexagons, and rhombuses. We played a game where students had to create a picture with different shape blocks, and describe it using attributes and directional words to a partner and see if they could create the same picture. In Language Arts, we have been working on reading digraphs with silent letters. We have been sorting, writing, and playing games with words that have silent letters. Some of these are 'wr', 'ph', 'kn', 'gn', 'dge', 'wh' and 'gh'. Our group of learners does an amazing job working together, taking turns, and learning through play. We are seeing some amazing improvements in reading, now that students recognize how to read these and other letter combinations. As quarter 3 comes to an end this week, Miss Soa and I have been reflecting on what an amazing group of students we have the pleasure of teaching this year. This is a direct reflection of the love and care our little ones receive at home. Thank you for your kind caring support that you provide at home. I really do think we make a wonderful team.
