This week's Math has been focusing on place value. We have been learning about place value using longs and cubes (you may know this better as tens and ones, or rods and units). We have also been using pennies and dimes as units of tens and ones. We have been doing a lot of counting and exchanging with pennies and dimes. Today we played a great big dice game where we raced to see which team could earn a dollar. You can find this game in the games section of the Everyday Math online portal if you want to play at home. Our unit of inquiry on Storytelling is in full swing. We have been focusing on the line of inquiry that: there are many ways tot tell stories. Over the past couple of days we have learned about telling stories dramatically. This week we have been looking at the story; 'The Gingerbread Man' as well as other variations. We worked in groups to do a readers theatre activity to retell the story. here are some short clips of our in class work: The old lady, Catch me if you can, The sly fox, Gobbled up. Readers Theatre is a way to involve students in reading aloud. In reader's theatre students "perform" by reading scripts created from grade-level books or stories. Reader's theatre is a strategy that combines reading practice and performing. Its goal is to enhance students' reading skills, fluency, comprehension and confidence by having them practice reading with a purpose. Reader's theatre gives students a real reason to read aloud. We loved it so much that we took our plays to the stage today. We had an additional audience of Dr. Brockvam and Mr. Johnson for a bit! In Language Arts, we have been learning about root words, prefixes and suffixes. Students completed a 'read the room' activity where they had to find words with prefixes and suffixes and extract the root word from each one. This was a lot of fun! Our IB representatives came in to watch this and had a blast watching our little learners learning on the move.
